You will research information on Music of the World for a Presentation Project. Part of your research will focus on Andean and Japanese music. You will able to choose one other option for a total of 3 cultures for the project.

Assessing Your Progress

Here is a tick list for the project. This will guide the information you are searching for, your presentation construction and your live presentation.

Lesson 1

Starting the Project-Google Docs

Your first step is to identify what you already know about the topic, what you want want to find out, and how you intend to do that.

Open up a Google Document for the project and share in the members of your group and your ICT teacher as collaborators.
Create a table in the document by clicking on the Table drop down menu and selecting the options as follows.

Lesson 2-Searching out and Evaluating Sources


There are many different resources you could choose when looking at music around the world.
Take a look at some of the sites in the Custom Search List below. Identify two sites that have interesting information on the topic.

Questions for Consideration

Copy and paste these questions and record your answers in your Google Doc for the project. Be ready to defend your answers.

1. Are these sites reliable?(Can you trust the information on them?)
How do you know if they are or aren't reliable?

2. Who publishes or authors the site? (Author information((if it exists)) can be found at the top of the article, publisher information can usually be found at the bottom of the page)

3. What exactly are the authors' points of view?(What opinions does he/she express? Is he/she showing any signs of bias?)

4. Do they back up their ideas with evidence that can be verified elsewhere? (Check other websites to find out.)

5. Most of these sites focus on different aspects of music. Which sites that you have found so you think will be most useful and why?

6. Do you have enough information? If not you will need to find out more...?


Lessons 3-4-Social Bookmarking and Note Taking

Learning Intentions: Add bookmarks, create and join groups, search bookmarks, utilise the toolbar, annotate and generate reports, create lists.

We are going to share your ideas from last lesson from your Google Docs.

We will be using Diigo bookmarking tool to save the sites you think are useful for the project.

Creating the Account

You next need to create your diigo accounts for KS3. Please use a combination of your real first name and the first letter of your last name for your user name (You may need to add a few numbers to it if it is already in use.) Use your avatar names to fill in the first and last name for these accounts, and type your school email address in the appropriate box.

You will be working in Diigo for the next two lessons.
In this lesson please create your account, download the toolbar (Firefox, Safari or Chrome) join the group, and begin bookmarking the web resources you plan on using.

Setting it Up
  1. Create your individual account at Diigo
  2. Drag install the Digo Toolbar in FireFox

In all cases you will need to drag the Diiglet button to the bookmarking toolbar. You might need to make that visible by using the menu at the top of the page.

Searching and Annotating

  1. Search out 2 relevant websites..use basic boolean search strategies..
  2. Highlight areas of interest, choose the snapshot option if appropriate (pdf,photos etc)

3. Right click on the page and use sticky notes to annotate it.

4. Add a brief summary of the information as a comment and add them to your group, as well as a list for your topic.

Power searching with Keywords and Operators


Now you will have a look at sites that are not listed in the Search List.
When doing so try out some of the Smart Search tools we have looked at in the past.



Copy the questions 1 and 2 below into your Google Document.

1. Which keywords would be useful in helping you find what you need?
When doing think of any synonyms for these keywords that might also be useful.

Add your ideas for useful keywords to Answergarden along with the rest of the class,
by clicking on this link and adding the /view information you teacher is displaying.
Then you can choose the keywords from the "garden" that you think would be most useful as answers to this question.



Next, construct a search query for using some of the keywords and add some of the operators we have discussed as needed (" " and -). Copy and paste the query in the space next to question 3. Only do this once you have it working and bringing back good results.

You will spend the next two lessons searching for good information, evaluating the websites you find, bookmarking good resources to the Diigo group and adding your notes to your bookmarks and the bookmarks of others.
